Fall at Old Dominion Forge
December 2004, the new forge is finally complete. This shop is the realization of a 20-year dream: to build a workshop that allows me to work in a period setting, producing my wares in a traditional manor. Though absolutely not necessary to produce fine period work, I believe that the right setting inspires a traditional craftsman to create, and makes the work even more satisfying.
The forge is based on some I have worked in, as well as several historic sites. I have drawn on aspects of several shops, combining features that I though best suited for the shop I had in mind. Come take a look inside...
Open the double, barn doors and walk back into a colonial workshop.
The focal point of the shop is the brick forge, with an ample table top for large work.
Anvils, swedge blocks, and cone mandrel stand ready to take on most any project.
Putting in the wood paneling and brick floor took several days of hard work. In fact, I'll be glad to get back to the smithing, it's a lot easier!
The 5 foot, double-chamber, great bellows supplies the necessary air to the fire. No electric blowers or trip hammers in this shop.
